Baldness is simply a disease for guys right? WRONG! Pattern Baldness affects a lot of women although it might be as highly known. According to the latest studies, over 35% of all cases of baldness are from women. The effects of going bald on a woman can be catastrophic. Losing something that you’ve cared for and treasured since before you can remember can leave you feeling depressed and can really hurt your self-esteem. Here are a few ways that you can prevent hair loss for women.

  1. Don’t dye your hair. Although coloring your hair is a time-honored tradition that practically every woman has done at least once in their lifetime, it can lead to serious damage to your hair and eventually to premature balding.
  2. Alcohol. Although it’s perfectly fine to have the occasional drink, or even get nicely plastered at the Christmas party, don’t make it a habit. Excessive drinking over a prolonged period of time has been shown to contribute to female balding.
  3. Avoid absurd dieting crazes. Your body wants specific kinds of food in order to function properly, if you don’t get the appropriate amount of calcium and protein your hair could very well start to fall out. Baldness is one symptom of progressive anorexia as well.
  4. Don’t use cheap products in your hair. Although we all like to save a buck here and there, your hair products are not the place to do it. Spend the extra couple of dollars on a brand name, quality shampoo and conditioner. Not only will your hair remain healthy, but you’ll keep it longer too.
  5. Over brushing. I’m sure you’ve heard the fantasy tales of maidens running 100 brushstrokes through their hair every day. Well… sorry princess, if you over brush your hair it will eventually start to fall out. Don’t exceed more than 20-30 brush stokes at a time. Any more can permanently damage your hairline.
  6. It’s too hot! Heat is another contributing factor to female baldness. Although I enjoy a scalding hot shower just as much as the next girl, try to keep them to a minimum. Also, a hairdryer is simply a heat gun, don’t use them. It may be ok to occasionally speed up the drying process with a hairdryer, but not only will your hair be stronger without it, but you won’t run the risk of destroying the follicles with excessive heat.

Never lose hope with receding hair as there are hair transplants available today for women that offer a permanent solution.
